Confessions of a Brunette on the Internet 233

I have been in a funk... I feel like I am finally starting to come out of it, but for a couple weeks especially it was pretty bad. I would say I was depressed even... which I don't feel like that happens to me very often. I'm happy that I am finally coming out of it because I don't enjoy being in it. I like being happy... obviously. My friend Megan suggested that I keep a journal every of things that I am thankful for to help me. This isn't a new concept for me, but instead of doing it every day... I thought I would try and make it a habit to start my confessions with something that week I was specifically thankful for instead of just listing generic things that I so easily do when I make lists. Just as writing weekly confessions (thoughts, feelings and experiences) has become a habit, I am hoping this will as well.

This week I am thankful for people. I know that is super generic, but let me expand on that. Of course I am thankful for my family and friends and people that care about me... they make life rich and meaningful. They are the people that can make you hurt and bring you down, but they are also the people that lift you back up and bring so much joy to life. The ones you know you can turn to no matter what and they will be there for you and love you. However, I'm talking even beyond those people. I'm thankful to the random guy at work that I have never talked to before that told me he loved my hair. I'm thankful to the people that run the fish store that I see every couple of weeks that I now call my friends because we chat often and they are so nice to me. I'm talking about my co-workers that notice when I'm down and ask if there is anything they can do for me. I'm talking about the random strangers that smile as they walk by and the couch surfers that I meet that are so excited to meet me and get to know about my life just because. I'm talking about my Pilates instructor that tells me every week that she loves me smile and comments on all of my stuff on Facebook. I'm talking about the strangers that follow my blog and leave comments of support and interest. The people at the cafe at work that always say hi and give me a hard time for not eating at the cafe as much anymore as I'm passing by to go to the gym. I could go on and on. There are so many good people in the world, and all of the people that cross my path in life in a positive way make my day better and more enjoyable... and they make a difference... to me. I am thankful for that.

I feel like I have been watching a lot of stuff lately. I finished Dexter and the last season of The Killing (which I was disappointed in). I am now watching "Moone Boy" which is an Irish show on Hulu about a little boy with an imaginary friend. I kind of love it. The accents are pretty awesome too. I just got back from seeing "The Giver" in the theater. I didn't read the book, but I enjoyed the movie. I would recommend it.

So sad to hear of Robin Williams passing away. It's so sad when people struggle so much with life that they can't take it anymore and take their own life. Robin Williams was defiantly a very talented actor and he will live on through all of his wonderful movies. I guess that goes to show that fame and fortune isn't always what it is cut out to be. Tonight (before we went to see The Giver) Allison and I watched Hook in his honor. What a great movie.

On Saturday night I went to the Salem Day's fireworks with the new guy in my ward that I am still trying to figure out. I figured out that I like him more one on one than in groups. I feel like we do better that way... I get him to talk more.  Anyway... it's funny because I think the Salem Day's fireworks last year was the only firework show that I went with a guy also. Anyway, it was my 6th firework show this summer and most likely my last. I don't know if there are any more cities left that haven't done them. I do love that about Utah. So many fireworks to watch. I never get sick of them. They are so magical.

I got my Peru book in the mail on Friday. I actually really love the way it turned out. It's my favorite book I have made so far out of all of my trips. India used to be my favorite, but I like this one even better. On Tuesday I went over to John's parents house to drop off some of John's stuff that I have meaning to drop off since I got back from Peru 3 months ago. I can't believe it has already been that long since I have been back. Just John's dad was there, but I had brought my book over in case his parents wanted to see a small portion of John's trip. His dad gave me some veggie juice that he had just juiced up and we sat down and went through the book and talked for 2 hours. It was really nice. I don't think I have ever had anyone go through a book that I have made of a trip page by page and stop and talk about each thing for a long time. It really took us 2 hours to get through the book. John's dad is really an interesting guy with a lot to say and a lot of knowledge on many different topics and always eager to learn more. John gets that from his dad. I wasn't intending to stay that long, but I didn't mind. I had a great time.
I found out this last week that a guy that I went to Jr High and High School with died of colon cancer. He was married and had two little girls. It was really sad. I read his story on facebook... he wrote a post about his battle with cancer... how it came all of the sudden when he thought he was at the peak of his health and then all of the sudden.... cancer. He told of the horrible things you have to go through with doctors to try and get rid of it and through his post you could tell he was so positive about the entire thing even though it was the worst thing to go through. Then all of the sudden, when he thought he beat it, he is now gone. He is my age! It is so sad. Just a reminder to me how short life is and that anyone could go at any time. Makes you look at your life differently and appreciate it a little more. Well... it does for me anyway.

I went to the dentist this morning. No cavities... which is always great news. I just wish they were a little quicker there and a little more personable. I go in every 6 months and I don't think anyone there remembers me, plus I have to go over the same information every time I go in. They always have to do my X-Ray's twice for some reason. I always have to explain that I have always had that compacted tooth that never came through the gums and I purposefully didn't have them do anything to fix it. So on and so forth. I guess it all doesn't matter as long as I leave hearing that I don't have any cavities.

On Saturday we had a stake activity at Spanish Fork Reservoir. It was seriously the oddest place. I would never swim there. It was like this big swimming pool that was filled with dirty water and stalked with fish. I couldn't even tell how deep it was. The one cool thing about it... it has a pretty sweet view of the city. Thankfully swimming wasn't the only thing you could do at this activity. I ate some food and played some volleyball. I forget how much I love playing volleyball until I play again.  It is frustrating to play at the same time because I used to be so much better. In college I was playing 3 times a week. I very rarely play now. It's like the piano... I used to be so much better, so now when I play, it is pretty frustrating. It would take A LOT of practice to get where I used to be.

I went to the Food truck Roundup for the second time. It is such a brilliant idea. So many trucks and different foods to choose from though, it's tuff for someone who is indecisive like me. I got Greek food tonight. I don't regret that at all. It was really good. Can't wait to go back and try other trucks. I think I will do an entire "Utah Dining" post to food trucks.

My friend Daniel helped me find and download my favorite childhood DOS computer game. Pretty much it was the only game that I not only loved but one of the only ones I played and completed. I downloaded it onto my computer.... I only played it for a little bit because I really don't have time for that stuff anymore, but sometimes I just like to relive my childhood #peterpansyndrome. Daniel said he would play it with me sometime, which would be way more fun than playing by myself. Oh that game. I remember thinking the graphics and music were so amazing.

Have I mentioned how much I love my patio and how much I love hanging out back there? It's true, I do. On Sunday I decided that I needed to use my fondu set. I have had it for years but have hardly used it. So I bought some stuff Saturday night and then invited a few people over Sunday night to enjoy it out on the patio. It was a fun little hang out. We all had a great time and summer nights truly are the best. Besides that... I think that was my week.

Rockport Camping

The other weekend we went camping at Rockport Reservoir. I already blogged about the lake... now that I have the pictures from RJ, I'm blogging about the camping part of it.

Allison and I have been wanting to camp all summer, but the first weekend in August was the first weekend we were able to. We decide to make it a group thing instead of just the two of us. More the merrier right? We got a late start that evening with everyone getting off of work and then stopping to eat so on and so forth. By the time we got there, it was getting dark.

We start the fire and set up camp for the night. We were all having a good time around the camp fire... making S'mores, singing and playing guitar and telling stories. It was all good until a park cop showed up and gave RJ a ticket for parking the car on the dead grass that is going to cost over $100! Yikes! Besides that, we were al laughing and having a good time and getting to know each other. Me, Allison, RJ, Jeremy and Chris are all in the same ward and know each other, but Allison brought her friend Annie that none of us knew and RJ and Jeremy brought their friend Jared that we didn't know. Always fun to throw new people into the mix.

Then it was time for bed. We were all tired after a long work week. RJ had told us he was going to bring 2 tents. 1 for the ladies and 1 for the guys. As it turns out... he could only find one tent, so that was all that he brought. It was a 4 man tent. I'm not sure why nobody wanted to sleep outside.... so we decided that all 7 of us could fit into the 4 man tent. Which we did. It wasn't very comfortable and I couldn't really move all night and didn't get much sleep, but we all fit in there. Pretty amazing actually. I wasn't sure how it was going to all pan out... so let me tell you how it went down.

Let's first start out with the positive. We didn't have anyone around us.... just us in an open field, that was nice. It was also nice that we left the top part of the tent off... this way we could see the stars. Wow... I haven't seen the stars that clear in a while. It was beautiful. We saw several shooting stars. Absolutely incredible. I really wish my camera could capture it, but I don't have those skills... or probably the right camera. Also having so many people so close to each other, I didn't get super cold at night which was nice. Now... I was one of the first ones in the tent. I had set up my sleeping pad and my sleeping bag and I decided... I was claiming my spot in the small tent before I didn't have a choice. Jared, the guy I had just met that night and had barely spoken to decided he was claiming the spot next to me... and he wasn't moving. Jeremy decided to take the spot on the other side of me... but to create a little more room decided to face the opposite way so his feet were by my head and his head was down by my feet. Nobody else did this. On the other side of Jared was Allison and Annie... there really wasn't much room left, but Chris squished in between Allison and Annie and poor RJ ended up at everyone's feet because he is the smallest, so he felt everyone move at different times all night long (except for me. I stayed in one spot all night, not by choice). I was laying on my side. As the night went on Jeremy was pushing me with his legs towards the rest of the group and Allison was slowly pushing Jared closer into me. Jared and I were VERY close and getting closer as the night went on. Kind of weird to be in THAT close proximity to someone you just met. I think he liked it though. He happened to be awake every time I was awake and paying attention to me and whispering to me as soon as I would open my eyes. He would ask me how I was doing, if I could sleep (obviously not, sometimes  my arm would fall asleep) and would ask me if I was cold. When I grunted yes that I was a little cold he moved even closer to me if that is even possible and tried to lay his arm (that was inside the sleeping bag) on top of me... cuddling while in sleeping bags doesn't work. Now I REALLY couldn't move. I just stopped fighting it. I would drift in and out of sleep. One point in the night I woke up and opened my eyes and Jared had one arm out of the sleeping bag and by my head and his face was resting on my arm that I had cradled by my face and we were pretty much nose to nose breathing in each other's faces. Thank goodness he didn't have bad breath! It still took me by surprise. I thought he was going to try kissing me in my sleep if the night continued this way. At one point I looked around the tent... nobody else is going through this, just me. It made for an interesting night.

The next morning was a little awkward. I could tell Jared was trying to be close. Like we just had this amazing bond over night... which I guess in a way we kind of did. Don't get me wrong, he is a good looking guy and a super nice guy... I just met him and wasn't even sure how I felt about him yet.... so I didn't really know how to respond the next day. Plus... I was a little out of it from lack of sleep. Anyway, I look back on that night and I think it was interesting and funny and all part of the camping adventure. This is the kind of weird things you do when you are single right? I guess so ha ha. Good times.

Motorcycle Photoshoot

Back in November we had a ward auction to help raise money for families that didn't have money to spend on Christmas for their kids. I auctioned off "Glam Shots by Tracy". My photography kind of got that nick name because that is my calling at church... to take pictures of people for the ward directory. However... I don't just take pictures inside with a flash in front of a white wall... no no. I take people outside with the best lighting and I use my nice SLR camera. Therefore... everyone looks their best. We have a very fine looking directory of people.

So I auctioned this off thinking a girl would buy it. Girls like getting their picture taken... at least most girls do. Not my roommate McKenzie. She hates it and will pretty much never let me take her picture. I wasn't at the auction. I was in Southeast Asia. When I got back I found out that a dude had purchased my Glam shots. I wasn't sure how I felt about this at first....

Nathan happens to own an awesome motorcycle, so right away I thought that would be an awesome prop for the photoshoot and something I haven't done before. So we did the photoshoot last week. I wish I could have told him what to wear... but I was right... the motorcycle was an awesome prop. These are some of my favorite shots.

Couch Surfing - Take 3

For some reason I had 3 couch surfing requests in one week. I said no to one who was asking to stay the next day and then the one last weekend that I blogged about and then this weekend I had two girls from Alaska stay with me on their way back from the Grand Canyon. They were young, but we had a good time. This is the most time I have spent with any of my couch surfers (not that I have had that many). I made that my plans this last weekend. They mostly just wanted to hang out around town... so I took them to downtown Provo. We went out to eat at Guru's... had a pie shake at Sammy's and we just walked around and checked things out. I forget how charming Provo is until I spend time down there. The next morning I took them to the Farmers Market and to some antique stores (because they are into that) and then up the canyon to Bridalveil Falls and then back to my house and they were off to Salt Lake to their next couch surfer.

They were so sweet and brought me some gifts from Alaska and Montana (where one of the girls is living now going to school). They gave me smoked Alaskan salmon and Alaskan flowers. They were very sweet. Very polite... easy to talk to and fun to hang out with. I always enjoy meeting new people and couch surfing is a fun way to do that. There are a lot of nice, fun and interesting people in this world.

Utah Dining - Take 3

Continuing my quest to try all of the places to eat in my area... it's a big challenge. This is where I left off last time.  I keep finding more and more places I have never tried or never even knew was around the corner from where I lived. How does that happen?

India Palace - Provo

I have been to India Palace many times before, but haven't blogged about it. I don't think it is any different than any other Indian place I have been to, but what I love about India Palace is that it is a lot less crowded than Bombay House (which I also love) and I believe a little cheaper? Also, if you go at lunch, you can get a buffet which is awesome because then you can try other foods besides playing it safe and always ordering Chicken Tikka Masala. There is a lot of other good Indian food people!

La Jolla Groves - Provo

This is another place I have been to before, but I took Lolly here when she was in town and thought I would add it to the review. I love this place! Everything I have tried here has been super good. I love the atmosphere... if you are wanting a nicer place to eat, I think of this place. At the same time it is not outrageously priced. Lolly and I both loved it.

The Black Sheep Cafe - Provo

I actually ate here a while ago for the first time so I'm stealing pictures from the internet because I don't know when I will go back again. I went with John and his brothers and their girlfriends. I didn't pay for it, but John said it was too expensive for what we got. I won't know until I go back again... but I do know it took forever to get our food. When our food came, I was happy with it. I got Navajo Tacos and they were really good. I would be willing to give this place another try.

Sammy's - Provo

I have been to Sammy's a few times here and there. It is a more expensive burger... I guess you can charge more for "gourmet burgers". Don't get me wrong, they are good... but if I am in the mood for a burger and I know I can get it cheaper somewhere else... I'm most likely going to do that. They have awesome shakes though. Some they make out of pies, some they make our of cupcakes from the Sweet Tooth Fairy. Things I really like about Sammy's? They have a pretty good location. Not usually an issue finding parking near by. I also like that they are open late (2 am... at least on weekends) and sometimes they have live music. I love the design and the atmosphere. They make it personal by putting up Polaroid pictures of people who come in and they let people sign the wall or wherever they find space to sign.

Brassas - Provo

I have passed by this so many times and have been meaning to try it for a long time and finally did. They have great Mexican food. I feel you are going to get way better Mexican food from small places like this rather than bigger restaurants like Los Hermonos. Personal opinion. I loved my steak burrito I got from here.

Roll Up Cafe - Orem

This is another place I passed so many times and wanted to try it. Maybe the huge owl out front caught my interest... I don't know. I finally got taken here for a date. It is a crepe place. I don't feel like these crepes were any more special than any other ones I have had... but I also feel like you can't go that wrong with crepes... or maybe I just haven't had an amazing crepe yet, I don't know. Anyway, the cafe is adorable, the menu options have hilarious names and I feel like any place that has this much Nutella in stock isn't going to disappoint.

 Hruska's Kolaches - Provo

I maybe stopped at this place because it had a cute fence, not because I was paying attention to the bakery. Seriously.

However, once we stopped, I saw a sign that said they were sold out for the day. Must be good right? So I went back the next day to see what that was all about. I would be lying to you if I told you I even knew what a kolach was before I ate one. I guess they are big in Texas and originally come from Czech. What I DO know... is not only was the guy working there the nicest ever, but it might be the softest, most buttery and delicious pastry I have ever put in my mouth. I tried the Cinnamon Roll one and the Strawberry, but I for sure want to go  back and try a breakfast stuffed one. What's even better is how cheap they are. No wonder they were sold out. I get it now. Found a gem in Provo. totally going back.
